A Weekend in Kefalonia: Souvlaki, Caves & Coastal Dreams

For many years I’ve been saying to myself, “I want to explore the Ionian!” The last time I was there was over 15 years ago, and all I can remember was being surrounded by green and crystal blue waters! Of course, I was itching to go back and see more. To my luck, Kefalonia’s local Effie Gyparaki reached out and promised me the best weekend in Kefalonia, and she certainly did not disappoint me. Our weekend was packed with adventure, and I was thrilled to be with someone who knew all the local restaurants and every side road to avoid traffic!

After a short flight from Thessaloniki, I landed in Kefalonia ready to soak up as much beauty (and food) as possible over the weekend. Effie picked me up in a bright red convertible Fiat 500, I was so ready to hit the road! My first stop? Argostoli, the island’s lively capital, and naturally, the first thing on my mind was food. I stumbled upon PIPERI and decided to give their souvlaki a try… and wow. Honestly, it was to die for, juicy, flavorful, and perfectly wrapped. The kind of meal you think about for days.

I was welcomed with warm hospitality by the owner of Helios Luxury Villas, Maria. She has Villas next door to each other, a short drive from Argostoli, and less than a 10 minute drive to Kefalonia’s airport. Waking up surrounded by nature was the perfect start to a busy weekend ahead.

Island Adventures: Caves, Coffee & Coastlines

The next morning, we set out on a scenic one-hour drive across the island to Sami Port. On our way to Sami, we detoured through the streets of Kefalonia to the Monastery of St. Gerasimos, the patron saint of Kefalonia. The small beautiful monastery on the side of the road, I lit my candle and remained in awe of its beauty and history.

We got to Sami and watched yachts bobbling gently in the marina, I sipped on a freddo espresso and enjoyed a warm, tiropita — my favorite kind of breakfast. Early morning proved to be the perfect time to visit two of Kefalonia’s natural gems: the Melissani Lake and the Drogarati Caves. We beat the crowds and had the surreal experience of floating through a sunlit underground lake.

By early afternoon, we made our way to Antisamos Beach, where the turquoise water sparkled like something out of a postcard. A quick dip here was the perfect way to cool down after a morning of exploring.

That evening, we headed back towards Argostoli, got all dolled up and checked out La Seniora Hotel’s weekly jazz night, the live music was such a vibe, and their pizza hit the spot.

Fiskardo & Boutique Dreams

Sunday was reserved for a little northern adventure to the stunning village of Fiskardo. This part of the island feels like a dream, elegant, serene, and full of charm. I couldn’t resist popping into a boutique (or two) and left with a couple of adorable outfits. We also passed by the Emelisse Hotel, it’s an absolutely gorgeous property that I’d love to return to for a longer stay. We stopped by Melina’s for a treat!

On the drive back to Argostoli, we made a too quick stop in the village of Assos, and honestly, it took my breath away. The colorful buildings hugging the water, the peaceful coves, the laid-back tavernas, it all looked like something out of a magazine. I kept thinking: Next time, I’m staying here. The villas looked dreamy, and the water was probably the clearest I’d seen all weekend.

Myrtos Magic & a Mythos Sunset

To wrap up our afternoon, we visited the famous Myrtos Beach. The view from above was absolutely stunning. We stopped for a swim, and enjoyed watching the sunset. On the way down from Myrtos, we stopped for dinner, I had lamb with rice, paired with a refreshing, ice-cold Mythos beer. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Would I Go Back to Kefalonia? Absolutely.

From the food to the natural wonders, the charming villages to the serene beaches, Kefalonia totally stole my heart. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, savor the moment, and dream about your next trip back.
